complete the wall. \u00a0If the paint matches, they are successful.<\/p>\n<p>In the example above, the mix is 12 cups of blue, 9 cups of red and 14 cups of white to create the color of the wall behind the couch. \u00a0The challenge is to start with 4 cups of blue and create the same color.<\/p>\n<p>There are five warm up slides and then they proceed to class challenges where they use four colors to create their own.<\/p>\n<p>I like this problem and would ask them to explain their answers to get to an understanding of ratios.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div you can see in the slide, students select which bot will click more times in 10 seconds. \u00a0There are 14 total slides with six battles and then a final battle. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is rather simple. \u00a0After they select their answer, they are asked to explain their reasoning. \u00a0This may be where the best thinking can be accomplished. I had one student claim that Bot #5 would click more because his arms are closer to his body.<\/p>\n<p>In the early slides, some may have used unit rate without realizing. \u00a0I would have a discussion around this in groups to guide them towards the concept of unit rate before introducing it. \u00a0<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Concrete<\/span><\/strong> work with manipulatives prior to this activity since it is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Representational<\/strong><\/span> and then <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>A<\/strong><strong>bstract<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>If they have trouble or get stuck, it may be time to get out a concrete manipulative.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2264525 After ten years as an officer in the United States Navy and eight additional years in management, I decided to become a teacher of mathematics, physics and earth science. About ten years into my teaching career, I discovered that I was an ineffective teacher. I did some research and found that most other teachers were also ineffective. I did more research and changed my traditional teaching style to modern methods where students worked on projects in class and were allowed to be creative and thoughtful. I was now a more effective teacher, but I still had more research to do and I continue pursuing better teaching methods to this day. After two years of project-based teaching, I began visiting classrooms throughout central Indiana on my prep periods to run activities and talk about brain science and math methods to teachers. Now with 18 years as a teacher and having taught every math subject from 6th grade through AP and IB math classes, I am leaving the classroom to become a full time trainer.
