  • I have studied many years of the latest math education methods and concepts and blended them into a practical and effective workshop to transform classrooms into effective and thinking classrooms designed to promote growth mindsets and develop strong conceptual math understanding that will propel your students to the highest levels of math and science.  I have taken great care to blend many different models for math education to create teachers who have the strongest understanding of effective practices.  Some of the methods I have studied include:<\/li>\n
  • 1.  Mathematical Mindsets (Including Jo Boaler’s Seven positive norms of math education)<\/span><\/li>\n
  • 2.  Principles to Actions (The eight effective practices for Math Teaching)<\/span><\/li>\n

  • 7.  the Symbiosis between <\/span><\/span>social and emotional learning (SEL) and Mathematics Learning (SMPs)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    –\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Teachers will have an understanding of Growth versus Fixed Mindsets<\/p>

    –\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Teachers will be able to set effective learning goals with their students<\/p>

    9AM.\u00a0Phase 1:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Growth Mindset Coach<\/span><\/u><\/p>

    \u00a0<\/p>

    Open with a short noncurricular activity (NCA) to get them thinking, demonstrate a NCA and show some cool math to raise passion for mathematics.<\/p>

    \u00a0<\/p>

    In this session, we will also establish our objectives with regard to a students holisitic mathematical experience.\u00a0\u00a0This includes their MATH MINDSET, Math Disposition and math skills.\u00a0\u00a0We define disposition as how they feel about math and learning math.<\/p>

    \u00a0<\/p>

    This short presentation will be an introduction the Growth Mindset Coach book which will be coveresd in detail though weekly emails for an entire year.<\/p>

    \u00a0<\/p>

    Phase 2:\u00a0\u00a0Understanduing and Implementing the Eight effective practices<\/span><\/u>\u00a0<\/span>\u2013 I will lead a class on each of the eight effective practices with occasional references to BTC.\u00a0\u00a0These will be sometimes combined as necessary depening on the activity that will be conducted in the workshop<\/p>

    9:30.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Establish mathematics goals to focus learning\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>

    Begin with short NCA\u00a0\u00a0(non-curricular activities)\u00a0\u00a0(I will have a few NCAs to hopefully inspire and ignite some passion for the beauty of mathematics.<\/p>

    \u00a0<\/p>

    We will discuss the importance of setting learning goals and a method to do so effectively.\u00a0\u00a0I will have a template teachers can use to set and review goals.\u00a0\u00a0This will be a short presentation and activity and teachers will receive a template for establishing and reviewing learning goals with students and parents\u00a0<\/p>

    Hour 2:<\/span>\u00a0Implement tasks that promote reasoning and problem solving<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>Use and connect mathematical representations<\/span><\/b><\/p>

    Begin with short NCA<\/p>

    \u00a0<\/p>

    In this session, we will run a white board activity and also Desmos, three-act tasks and\u00a0\u00a0Open Middle problems as time allows. This period will be longer In order to demonstrate more activities.\u00a0\u00a0Participants will be given access to more activities they can use in their classrooms.<\/p>

    \u00a0<\/p>

    The goal of this session is to get the teachers out of their chairs discussing interesting activities that they will use with their students<\/p>

    3:15 Phase 3:\u00a0\u00a0Moving towards a thinking classroom<\/span><\/b><\/b><\/p>

    In this phase, I will deliver the concepts covered in BTC and we will talk about how to move towards a thinking classroom.\u00a0\u00a0This will be a session on BTC with lots of spoilers and anecdotes from the BTC facebook page.<\/span><\/p>

    4:00. Conclusions:<\/span><\/p>

    Combining the key elements of Math Education in your teacher brain as you interact with students.\u00a0\u00a0It is not necessary or effective to focus on each and every math practice or positive norms or SEL COMPETENCY when you lead a class, but you should have them in your mind so you can be consistent with them as you work with the kids.\u00a0\u00a0I will conclude with a fast review of the \u201cLists\u201d and how they interrelate so you can blend them into your teaching.<\/span><\/p>
